Only One Baby Shower?

Two Moms and an Expert Share Their Thoughts

  • Over and above registering for your shower, never tell people what to bring as a gift. "Telling people to bring a book for the baby instead of a card ... you have now told people to purchase two gifts – a book and a regular gift," Collachi says.
  • Raffles that require guests to bring a certain item to have their name entered into the draw are taboo, too according to Collachi. She shares her reasoning behind this rule: "If people choose to participate, then they have purchased two gifts at your direction ... if people choose not to participate, then they may feel awkward if they are the lone holdout," she says.
  • What Does the Expert Say?
"Every chance that we get to let children and siblings know that we value every precious life – such as a baby shower – is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate," says Judi Vankevich, known as Judi the Manners Lady from Vancouver, British Columbia, and a mother of three. She believes the purpose of a baby shower is to commemorate the arrival of a new child into a family and it is not only about gifts.

Vankevich shares her personal experience as a mother who has had three showers, one for each of her children. "I loved my first shower and for my second two children, it meant so much to me when my girlfriends and the ladies from my church had a little lunch to celebrate the arrival of my two boys," she says.
