In the Crib

What Items Should Be in a Baby's Crib?

By Beth Hering

Parents should check the recommended age for any toy/entertainment object put in or around the crib. Loose toys should be removed when the child is sleeping. Parents also should perform this simple test: If an item can fit through a toilet paper tube, it is a choking hazard. Periodic inspection of items can ensure that they are in proper working order.

Debra Smiley Holtzman, author of The Safe Baby (First Sentient Pub., 2005), reminds parents that in order to avoid the risk of strangulation, all mobiles and hanging toys should be put out of the child's reach and removed completely by either the age of 5 months or when he begins pushing up on his hands and knees. And for older babies, watch out for anything in the crib that could possibly give him the boost he needs to propel himself out.

Decorating your baby's room is one of the joys of new parenthood. But instead of thinking of the crib as a castle, it may be better to think of it as a fortress that needs to protect your baby. Both you and your child will sleep better thanks to your caring efforts. And then you can concentrate on the best part – enjoying your wonderful little prince or princess.
