It also won't help much unless it is done pretty regularly – daily, if possible. Most doctors don't recommend starting earlier in pregnancy, but other exercises (such as squats) may be started sooner, which will help prepare the perineum for childbirth.

Perineal integrity can be influenced by other factors as well. Experts believe that good nutrition is critical, both during pre-pregnancy and pregnancy, and that abstaining from smoking is also helpful.

If interested in learning the perineal massage technique, talk to your childbirth educator. They are the most qualified to help you learn the best way to perform it.

Tips for Using Perineal Massage
  • Do it at the same time every day so you create a routine. Performing it before your shower or before bed is a good reminder.
  • Some couples may want to use it as a form of foreplay before sexual intercourse.
  • As the mother becomes comfortable with the stretching sensation you can increase the stretch.
  • As with any exercise, stop if it becomes painful. It should be a bit uncomfortable, but not painful.
