Twins
How Will You Know?
Many women wonder how they will know if they are expecting twins (or more!).
"Some signs and symptoms of a multiple birth include excessive morning sickness and exhaustion in the first trimester, measuring or feeling farther along than you are in pregnancy, and hearing two heartbeats," says Certified Nurse-Midwife Linda Given Welch. "Whenever there is a question of multiple birth, an ultrasound is ordered."
In addition, some moms of multiples say they just "had a feeling" they were carrying more than one baby.
"Call it women's intuition if you want, but I just knew," says Janet*, a member of the iParenting.com community. "I felt really heavy and was dreaming about two babies. Sure enough, the ultrasound at 10 weeks showed two little ones! My husband and doctor couldn't believe it, since I had told them I was expecting twins at my previous appointment. No one believed me until they saw the little guys on the ultrasound monitor."
Her fraternal twin boys were born five months later and are now happy little toddlers.
