Don't Rain on My Parade
Feeling Fabulous During Pregnancy
By Shannon McKelden
So can you have an awesome pregnancy just by keeping a positive outlook?
"I've never felt more pretty or more purposeful than when I was pregnant," says Heather Cook of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She found lots to be positive about. "I ... never cared if people touched my belly and in fact I loved to be touched! I loved eating and didn't care about the weight gain because I was always encouraged to gain. My second pregnancy was the best because I was so comfortable in my skin."
Bridget Swinney, a nutrition consultant and author of Eating Expectantly (Meadowbrook Press, 2000), believes the way you feel about your pregnancy can definitely help. "A positive attitude can help you make good choices that lead to a fabulous pregnancy," she says. "For example, if you're feeling depressed, fat and ugly, in your mind things won't get any worse if you dig into that chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream in the freezer. But if you're thinking more positively, you'll be able to make positive choices to match – making a healthy fruit salad and going on a nature walk will help you work on feeling better about yourself and your pregnancy."
Making positive choices such as those above, caring for yourself and being proactive about your pregnancy can help. The better you feel about your pregnancy, the less the negative aspects will bother you.
"I had a wonderful time being pregant, no morning sickness, no bizarre hormones," says Lesley Woodruff of Newberg, Ore. "I just glowed for nine months! One of the big reasons I was so happy was my birth choice: a free-standing waterbirth center. This offered tremendous peace of mind about the culmination of the pregnancy."
