Sitters for Newborns
Finding the Right Babysitter for New Babies
By Katherine Bontrager
In a panic, O'Malley and her husband signed up with an Internet nanny agency, nannies4hire.com. "I chose that agency over others honestly because it seemed the most user-friendly of all the online agencies I saw, and, living in Los Angeles, the traditional brick-and-mortar agencies were just too pricey for us, so we knew we had to find a better way," she says.
The O'Malleys posted an ad on the Web site and got several responses. They contacted nannies that they thought might be good fits and set up personal interviews with five candidates. That's how the couple found their nanny, Tiffany.
"The Web site offers a free background check, which we appreciated, as well as applications, interview questions to ask, how to check references and many other helpful tools," O'Malley says. "It made the whole process so easy and we now have our perfect nanny. She's great and has become part of our family."
The site also has listings for babysitters and O'Malley plans to use this list on those occasions her nanny can't sit. "I just can't say enough good things about this site," she says.
The challenges that Davis and O'Malley faced are increasingly common, says Mary Sullivan Cooper, CEO and founder of MommyMixer, a company that connects families in need of part-time babysitting with college students. "Finding a sitter is difficult because parents no longer have the connection they once had to extended family or the ability to call a neighbor down the street. Families are disconnected and have trouble establishing relationships or connections with anyone who wants to babysit."
