Pregnancy-friendly Workplaces
From the Labor Force to the Labor Room and Beyond
By Becky Lane
Since her children's births, Bank of America has established an eight-week paid leave policy for new dads, too, Travis says. "Most dads I know aren't quite comfortable doing that yet but most do take at least a couple weeks to a month," she says. "It's very helpful to the mom as long as they're helping!"
Allison Green's former employer also looks out for its pregnant employees. An independent contractor now, Green worked during her first pregnancy for SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now), a nonprofit agency helping victims of sexual abuse. "They were very pregnancy-friendly especially since the agency is very pro-family and provides education, assistance and therapy for families in our community," says the Winston-Salem, N.C., mom of two.
Green was away from work longer than expected with her pregnancy due to pre-eclampsia. During that time, "I was supported by my employer emotionally as well as providing me time to take off for doctor's appointments," she says. In addition, her healthcare "paid for everything (including my c-section and prolonged hospital stay) but my $200 co-pay," she says.
Karydes enjoyed benefits with her company even after her baby was born. "When my company offered me a lactation room, I was as happy as a clam to have a private room with a mini fridge and microwave," she says. "It allowed me to breastfeed in peace and I didn't have to worry about someone accidentally coming into my office while I was pumping or hearing the whizzing sound of the pump!"
