After Years of Infertility, A Couple Digests Wonderful News

s. We still had options, but it was getting harder and harder to be hopeful about our chances.

"Do you want to take a break?" Charlotte asked me.

"No," I answered immediately. "Because if we stop now, I'm afraid we won't have what it takes to start again."

Each of us had faced significant medical intervention, a bit of dignity loss and the almost unbearable sympathy from friends and family who no longer even spoke of children in our company. We were running on emotional fumes and the dwindling momentum that hope provided. Barring a miracle, stopping at that point would have been the end of the road for our conception efforts. Charlotte is an optimist, and I am a pessimist. We are both sore losers and neither of us was ready to throw in the towel.

The nurse had scheduled Charlotte for an ultrasound to check on the size of the cyst. If it had not decreased in size, then we would not be able to go through with the insemination. If it had shrunk, then it would be up to us whether we wanted to proceed with our sixth procedure or would rather give Char's body some time to recover.

Coincidentally, the date of that appointment was very close to the date of Charlotte's anticipated ovulation, so we would be able to take care of both issues at basically the same time.
