After Years of Infertility, A Couple Digests Wonderful News

ur chances, but we would not have that opportunity this time. Literally, we felt like we were down to our last shot.

Easter Sunday came almost two weeks later, and Charlotte was experiencing some spotting and cramping that she had always associated with the start of her period. We had a late lunch and spent the rest of the day discussing the emotional and financial impact of IVF (in vitro fertilization). We looked at selling stock, refinancing our house, taking out loans and anything else we could think of to raise the money that we knew would be required. There is no dollar amount that can be put on having a child, but it would be nice if we could afford to feed and clothe the child after his or her arrival. The next step had to be an open-minded and responsible one.

All that was left was to wait for Char's period to start, and then we could confirm that our most recent effort had not worked and it was time to take the next step. The infertility clinic runs a blood test on a woman if she reaches Day 14 of her cycle without her period starting. Char felt that it was coming, but she had not actually started by Day 14. So she called and had the blood test, but as the results would not be due for a few more hours, we cheated and picked up a home pregnancy test.

Positive.

Char is entering her 10th week of pregnancy, and since we are considered a "high risk" pregnancy, the clinic has been doing ultrasounds every two weeks. We have gotten the rare chance to see a little black blob become a tiny sea monkey with an even tinier heart flutter and then grow into an identifiably human fetus.
