Tai Chi
Experience the Ancient Art of Tai Chi
By Charlene Torkelson
The Chen style of Tai Chi teaches three principles that explain the basics of most Tai Chi:
- Vertical body alignment.
- Natural breathing.
- Using as little muscle tension as possible to do the movement correctly.
The benefits of these three principles provide everyone – pregnant or not – with relaxation, focus and concentration, deep breathing, better balance, flexibility, improved circulation, strength, coordination, reduction of stress and energy. If some of these features seem to fit your needs, then Tai Chi might be the fitness program for you. It is an ideal choice during pregnancy.
There are other considerations that make Tai Chi very appealing.
- You don't have to be in great shape to do it. (Although with any exercise program done during pregnancy, always check with your doctor before beginning.)
- All ages and body conditions can do Tai Chi. Beginning classes make the movements simple to do.
- Unlike other martial art forms, there is no uniform. Wear comfortable clothing that allows movement.
- There are classes available everywhere.
Although all of this may seem simple, easy and without the normal adjustment pains associated with beginning a new fitness program, Tai Chi is not without some discomfort. Remember, with the emphasis on posture and body alignment, there are many who have had poor or incorrect posture for a lifetime. Readjusting this position may cause some uncomfortable days.
The best way to begin a Tai Chi program is to take or observe a class with a qualified instructor showing the proper movements. There is a world directory of Tai Chi useful in finding an appropriate class or simply visit The Tai Chi Site online at www.thetaichisite.com for a link to a school near you.
