Organic Options
The Pros and Cons of an Organic Pregnancy
By Crystal Patriarche
Supermarkets have organic foods in many areas, though you might need to ask for help finding them. Many natural food stores or farmer's markets carry a wide variety of organic food. In addition to organic fruits and vegetables, there are organic eggs, milk, fish, turkey and chicken. Angela Stengler says she can even buy canned organic beans and organic ketchup in her supermarket now.
If you are unsure if the food is organic, look at the package. "It should tell you on the package, it's not hidden," she says. "If you can't find out, then call the number of the company and ask them." Stengler admits to calling many companies and going up to strawberry stands and asking if the berries were organic.
For women who want to try less expensive alternatives, Angela Stengler says to look for "transitioanal" organic food. That means that the food was grown in a crop that is being transitioned to organic, so it may contain some pesticides but not as many as regular food.
In terms of eating out at restaurants, an increasing number have organic on their menus. Finding wholesalers that sell large quantities of organic food at reduced costs is hard, and some restaurants do not foot the cost to order special organic food. In that case, try ordering fruits that have a hard rind-like melon. Softer fruits like berries or pears absorb pesticides more than fruits that have that a protective shell.
"In general, if you watch what you eat, eat more whole foods and stay away from packaged foods full of nitrates and chemicals, you tend to live a healthier lifestyle," Stengler says. "It's quite easy to eat organic and make the transition."
