A Couple about to Hit a Jackpot

By Steven Winn

Leaving Sally deep in conversation, I walked to the edge of the pool and dove out as far as I could, suspended in a shimmering blue silence. When I finished my laps, 20 minutes later, Sally was waiting for me at the ladder. As I pulled myself up to her, I was suddenly, helplessly struck with how beautiful my wife was. Not because she'd beaten the odds, somehow, and regained the lithe form she'd had a year ago. She was beautiful, looming there with our baby pressed up against the fabric of her bathing suit, because she held some potent secret even she didn't fully comprehend. Launched on a strange and remarkable journey, she was taking me along for the ride. Now I understood what my health teacher and the farm equipment dealer meant.

"Come on," Sally said. "Let's go up to the room."

Strolling along the Strip that evening, we congratulated each other for choosing Las Vegas. There was something about the place, we agreed, as we passed the Roman charioteers guarding Caesar's Palace on our way to the exploding volcano at the Mirage, that seemed oddly appropriate for an expectant couple.

Strung together with its endless ropes of pulsing light, this fantasy of a city is preposterously lovely in its way, as grand, ungainly – and full of hope – as a woman's body at the peak of pregnancy. Like everyone we passed that warm night, we could feel it in our bones: the next jackpot was going to be ours.
