Pesticides and Your Health
Should You Go Organic While Pregnant?
By Jenn Director Knudsen
The choice is yours.
"It's what fits your lifestyle," says Tartamella-Kimmel. "Just because you eat organic doesn't mean you're eating a healthy diet. And organic calories still count." For example, she says organic broccoli shipped from California to her home state of Connecticut probably contains fewer nutrients than a local, conventional variety that didn't endure a cross-country trek. And she adds it's a misnomer to fear conventional foods; farmers are required to adhere to government-regulated standards that guide pesticide use.
Tartamella-Kimmel says the key to healthy eating – especially in pregnancy when a woman is at higher risk for developing a food-borne illness due to her compromised immune system – is two-fold. It's paramount to stick to a diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and lean meats (for those who aren't vegetarian). And following safe food-handling procedures is a must.
She cautions against buying foods that are bruised or damaged or haven't been adequately refrigerated in the store. Tartamella-Kimmel also advises people to wash all produce – including fruits and veggies with rinds that can harbor salmonella – in cool tap water with a good vegetable brush.
These are the practices she adheres to – as both a nutrition expert and a pregnant woman; her first child is due in mid-July.
