Nutritional Nesting
Stocking the Postpartum Pantry
By Jennifer C. Martinkus
- Stock the freezer with individually wrapped lean meats stored in airtight containers. Lean protein sources are an important part of a balanced diet and can be part of quick and simple meals. Simply thaw the portions you'll need, prepare them with a marinade or an herb or spice blend and grill or broil them. Good choices include chicken breasts, pork tenderloin and other lean cuts of meat such as beef tenderloin or flank steak.
- Don't forget that breakfast is essential to begin your day with the energy you'll need as a new mother. Make sure you have a selection of whole-grain cereals on hand for a quick and convenient breakfast. Try to select those that have fewer than 15 grams of sugar, provide an abundant source of dietary fiber and are low in fat (particularly hydrogenated oils). Paired with fresh fruit, skim milk and whole-grain toast topped with nut butter, you'll have an ideal, quick breakfast. Hard-boiled eggs are an excellent option for a higher-protein breakfast. If you're not a fan of cereal, stock up on frozen fruit and prepare morning smoothies with yogurt, juice and a dash of wheat germ.
Create enlivening shortcuts. Healthful foods need not be bland, and full-flavored foods aren't necessarily unhealthful. Marinades and herb and spice blends work wonders to liven up your menus. It is possible to find pre-made marinades and spice blends of excellent quality on the market. Simply read each label carefully and select those that are made with all-natural ingredients, are low in fat and contain few or no additives. Even better, make them from scratch to ensure the best quality possible. Make triple or quadruple batches of your favorite marinades and freeze them in individual use portions. For added convenience, freeze them in large, plastic zipper bags and marinate meats, tofu or vegetables directly in the bags before grilling, saut訮g or broiling. Keep blends of favorite herbs and spices in the pantry, stored in airtight containers. Use as a rub before grilling for an especially quick and healthful meal.
