Nutritional Nesting
Stocking the Postpartum Pantry
By Jennifer C. Martinkus
- Get cooking. Whether or not your family members are fans of casseroles, you can stock the freezer with enough pre-made meals to last for weeks. Prepare and freeze batches of your family's favorite soups to thaw as needed. The same goes for your family's favorite sauces. Tomato sauce and pesto are quickly and easily made and frozen in individual-use portions. Pasta dishes freeze especially well, be it lasagna, stuffed manicotti or ravioli. You could also freeze homemade pizza crust for a dinner the whole family can have fun with.
- Forget packaged baked goods and mixes – they're customarily high in sugar, unhealthful fats and chemical additives. Rather than relying on these convenience foods, prepare your own "mixes." Blend together the dry ingredients for whole-grain muffins and snack breads to enjoy as healthful breakfasts and snacks. Store the dry ingredients in airtight containers and add wet ingredients just before baking. If you have other children, this can be a quick and simple task to enjoy together. Of course, you could also bake them ahead of time and freeze them.
- Enlist help! As much nesting energy as you may have, there are some things you'll need help with. Designate someone to visit the grocery store to stock up on perishables just after you've delivered your baby. Prepare a list in advance so you'll come home to a kitchen well stocked with fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese, eggs, bread, milk and anything else to make your first days home more enjoyable.
