Eating Disorders for Two
Helping the Anorexic or Bulimic Mom-to-be
By Laura Paul
Some of the warning signs that a woman has an eating disorder include picking at her food, not eating consistently, skipping meals, voicing an extreme amount of concern about how she looks and stating that she is fat and ugly. "To an individual with an eating disorder, they feel fat, ugly," Dr. Jahraus says. "The whole way we work to treat them during that time – because we are not just treating one person, we are treating two people at that point – is to really try and help them by doing an ultrasound and getting a picture so they can see there is a baby there."
On the bright side, some women take a respite from their eating disorder during their pregnancy. Some of them recover after learning proper eating habits again and becoming a mother.
Fifty percent of women with bulimia have irregular or no menstrual periods, Dr. Jahraus says. Some of the signs that a woman might be hiding bulimia include becoming increasingly isolated, not wanting to eat much with the family, eating on her own and bingeing.
It can be tricky to identify bulimia during pregnancy because it's unclear whether a woman is vomiting due to morning sickness or because of a fear of getting too fat. "How do you differentiate that and the vomiting of somebody who really is struggling with bulimia?" he says. "That's pretty hard to do sometimes. But you have to put two and two together. If the individual is voicing all kinds of concerns about body image and how they look and how fat they are, you put that together and wonder if we are really dealing with bulimia."
