Eating Disorders for Two
Helping the Anorexic or Bulimic Mom-to-be
By Laura Paul
"It gets to the source of why it's there," Cohen says. "It's a quicker way to get to those underlying sources than perhaps in talk therapy. There are a lot of different ways to treat an eating disorder. Even group therapy or supportive therapy can help as long as it's addressed. You are not the only one that has this; it's not your fault. You have a problem you can handle and deal with, with outside help."
Stauff, who teaches childbirth education classes, says nearly all women diet after the baby is born. Just because they want to wear a size 8 instead of a 14 does not mean they are obsessed with losing weight. They just need to be sensible about it, especially while breastfeeding, and set realistic goals that take into consideration their new body.
Stauff says some women have unrealistic expectations, thinking once the baby is born they are going to get back into their regular clothes. "I remember people in childbirth classes asking me, 'Should I bring my jeans to go home in?' I remember laughing, and said, 'No. Bring what you wore when you were seven months pregnant.' Some people really think the baby is going to come out and their stomach is going to be totally flat and they are going to be back to their size 6. It does not work like that."
