Causes and Concerns Regarding Your Cravings

Carrie Wakefield from Lake Worth, Fla., who is 8 months pregnant, also has some insight into cravings. "I think one reason for cravings is that a pregnant woman's diet can be somewhat limited. If someone is told they can't have too much chocolate, you know that chocolate is going to be the only thing on their mind."

Craving Clay?

We can all joke about cravings for pickles and ice cream, but what if you are craving something from the laundry room instead of the pantry? "Women with a condition called pica often crave strange materials like laundry starch, clay and even dirt," Johnson says. "The ingestion of ice (pagophagia), starch (amylophagia) or clay (geophagia) is felt to be due to iron deficiency." He adds that once the deficiency is corrected, the bizarre cravings usually end.

So what do you do if you're consumed by cravings? "If a pregnant woman is concerned about her cravings, she should certainly talk to her doctor," Johnson says. He encourages women to open up the lines of communication with their practitioner. Besides, talking to your friends about your sudden craving for dirt may cause some raised eyebrows, but talking to your doctor would certainly shed some light on the situation.

Eating and Exercise

Even though you may feel nauseous in the morning, don't skip out on the first meal of the day.Eating a good breakfast can keep cravings to a minimum, as well as provide energy to get you through the day.
