Pickles and Ice Cream?
Causes and Concerns Regarding Your Cravings
By Melissa Granberry
Unfortunately for those pregnant women craving chocolate, the additional calories should be made up of nutritious foods. "When craving something sweet, I would purchase a chocolate bar, then hold on to it until the weekend came," Wakefield says. "That chocolate bar would be the highlight of my Saturday on many occasions."
Bucki-Lowe also had to keep her Twins Pizza craving in check. "My first trimester, I was eating everything I craved," she says. "Unfortunately, I gained 12 pounds from the pizza! Since the dramatic weight gain, I have been fighting the cravings."
When pregnant, you never know when a sudden craving may pop up. "A good Caesar salad may be dinner for a week at a time," Wakefield says. "The next week, I might want an Italian sub with oil, vinegar and hot peppers all over it. It's as simple as seeing a commercial one evening and saying, 'I want that!'" Fortunately, most pregnant women find their cravings begin to taper off after the first trimester.
So go ahead and give in to a craving occasionally. Just remember, maintaining a well-balanced diet and regular exercise will have both Mom and Baby enjoying "sweet" success.
