Q. I've heard that exercise can make labor and delivery easier. Is this true?

L.H. Labor and delivery can be one of the most physically demanding events a woman will ever experience. If you were going to run in a marathon you would train for it, right? Well, pregnancy and delivery can be much easier if you train your body for the big day. Strengthening your heart, lungs, hips, thighs and abs will help you tremendously. Practicing yoga and breathing techniques will help you cope and relieve stress.

Q. Can I lift weights while pregnant?

L.H. Lifting weights during pregnancy can help keep you toned if you keep a few safety tips in mind:

1. Avoid isometric exercises in which you hold contractions, as this can restrict blood flow.
2. Make sure you are lifting a weight that is slightly challenging yet not strenuous.
3. Avoid moves that cause discomfort to the back.

Q. How can I know if I'm overdoing exercise? What signs should I look for?

L.H. Listen to your body. If you notice any of the following stop the activity immediately and contact your physician:
