Eye Changes While Expecting
Don't Neglect Eyesight During Pregnancy
By Kelly Burgess
- Thickening cornea. This may alter the shape of the cornea, thus affecting how contacts lenses fit.
- Corneal sensitivity. Corneas become less sensitive so they don't notice irritations as readily.
- Red conjunctiva. Redness and swollen or glassy appearance is related to water retention.
- Swollen eyelids. This can make the eyes feel less comfortable with contact lenses.
- Fewer tears. Hormone changes may cause less tears to be produced, making eyes feel dryer. This may also cause redness.
- Vision changes. Some nearsighted women may notice their distance vision becoming worse, especially after a long day. Women who are far-sighted and those who are a little older may find their farsightedness worsening.
Because these changes may lead to contact lenses not fitting properly, Dr. Thau says it's important during this time to avoid overuse or misuse of contact lenses. She recommends the following:
- Scheduling an eye appointment during pregnancy to update the prescription. This will cut down on the chances that the contact lenses will fit poorly and harm the eye.
- Wear contacts less frequently, and try not to exceed a maximum of 12 hours of wear.
- Be sure glasses are updated and fit well. All women should have back-up glasses anyway just in case they need them during labor. If they have them during pregnancy they'll be less likely to abuse contacts.
- Another reason to be sure glasses are the proper prescription is those hectic days when the baby is an infant. It's much easier to get up for middle-of-the-night feedings and just grab your glasses than to try to struggle with contacts.
