Blau also switched to organic food and "green" brands for her detergents and household cleaners, and brought plants in to keep the air in their apartment naturally clean, instead of using artificial products and fresheners.

"All of this helped set the stage," Blau says. "I surrounded myself with healthy choices so it was easier to live that lifestyle throughout my pregnancy."

5. Eat Healthy for Two

Part of maintaining a healthy weight and getting the proper nutrients during pregnancy means eating a balanced diet with plenty of fresh, natural foods.

"I started eating organic fruits and vegetables," Blau says. "And I signed up for a food delivery service that uses produce (often organic) from a local farm to whip up healthy prepared meals so I'd always have a refrigerator stocked with smart choices."

Spring is a delicious time for healthy eating because fresh fruit is more readily available as the weather warms up, and fruit is an ideal way to maintain blood sugar and avoid fluctuations that contribute to nausea and morning sickness, Dr. Davis says. Plus, fruit is low in calories and high in nutritional value, which means hungry moms-to-be can't overdo it.

"Keep in mind that when Mom thinks she's 'eating for two' in her first few months, she's referring to her growing fetus that is tiny and weighs less than 1 pound," Silber says. "How many extra portions does someone that size really need?"
