Problem Two: Sibling Rivalry
When older children are present, parents will usually try to involve them in the process of the arrival of their younger sibling. These efforts may be met with excitement and anticipation of having another child. However, it is not uncommon for older children to decide they don't want the baby after the baby has arrived. "Many older siblings are all for the idea of a little brother or sister until he or she actually comes home," Deutsch says. "Then, the sound of a baby crying at all hours, Mom and Dad jumping up at the baby's every need and family and friends coming over just to see the new baby can become a little overwhelming. It can breed feelings of resentment or jealousy and can leave the older sibling feeling very lonely."

Sibling rivalry, resentment or jealousy of an older child can easily be tamed. According to Deutsch, parents who work together can ensure that both their new baby and their older child/children get all the attention they need. "Two children now both need two parents' attention," she says. "The older child may really be missing Mom's attention. Dads can help by giving extra attention to the older child and also by taking over the care of the newborn so Mom has some free time to spend with them as well."
