Embracing an Unplanned Pregnancy
A Real-life Guide to Overcoming the Unexpected
By Jacqueline Rupp
Deciding to become a parent is a major life decision and shouldn't be entered into lightly. When considering your options, you'll need to ask yourself many tough questions. The more honest you are with yourself now, the easier things will be later on.
"Just begin by looking at your life," says Cara Gault of The American Pregnancy Association, a nonprofit organization offering education, research and advocacy as well as a free helpline (1-800-672-2296) to women in all stages of motherhood. She offers the following questions to answer as a starting point in your deliberation process:
- What are your goals? Is parenting something you have thought about and eventually planned on doing?
- Have you looked at all your options?
- What is the relationship with the child's father? Can you see a family unit realistically coming together? If not, are you willing to go it alone?
- Can you provide an environment in which a child can thrive?
"You really need to think about what is best for you," says Dorrie Wheeler, author of The Unplanned Pregnancy Book for Teens and College Students (Sparkledoll, 2004) and The Unplnned Pregnancy Handbook
