Music to Birth By
Songs Can Help You Relax, Focus and Possibly Even Ease Labor

"Music connects us to our very most true selves," says Leslie Nuchow, a labor and delivery nurse who has been doula for over 18 years and is training to be a homebirth midwife in New York City, N.Y. "In that true, honest place, lies all the power we need. It is from this space that a woman must birth her child. It is from this place that mothers are born."
In 2004, the Journal of Midwifery and Women's Health published a review article that noted that music can decrease pain perception during labor. This article indicated that many hospital maternity departments and birth centers provide CD/DVD players.
"I found music to be a good escape as I labored with both of my children," says Tara DiMilia, a resident of Flemington, N.J. DiMilia coordinated the development of Stork Tunes, a soon-to-be released CD designed to assist women relax while they prepare for and deliver their babies. Stork Tunes, which benefits the March of Dimes, consists of soothing, inspirational music compositions focused on the power and joy of motherhood by artists including Celine Dion, the Dixie Chicks and Norah Jones.
As a renowned, professional musician, Merry Miller plays harp music for moms and babies – in the hospital and at their homes. She says harp music is medically proven to help both moms and babies relax and lulls a newborn to sleep; various studies have been published in The Harp Therapy Journal and other medical publications. Miller recently recorded a CD called Dream Baby
