Music to Birth By
Songs Can Help You Relax, Focus and Possibly Even Ease Labor
By Kim Seidel
. "Harp music truly calms children and parents and is especially helpful during pregnancy and labor," Miller says. She performs timeless classics such as "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," "Brahms' Lullaby" and "You Are My Sunshine" on the harp. These songs are set to soothing sound effects like streams trickling, birds chirping and babies laughing.
A singer and songwriter, Carla Lynne Hall of New York City recorded a lullaby, "My First Child," that celebrates the bond between a mother and her unborn child. "The lullaby received some great attention from celebrities like Courtney Cox and Debra Messing during the 'Celebrity Baby Boom of 2004,'" Hall says. "This song was originally written by a male friend of mine who didn't have kids. His original version was a bit more rockin', and I wanted to give the song more of a delicate treatment."
It's a huge compliment to Hall that several of her pregnant friends have included "My First Child" in their mommy-to-be iPod playlists.
Though every mom has different tastes in music, Hall recommends a few tunes for a pregnancy:
- "Baby" by Debbie Deane is a cute and funky song about wanting to know everything about the tiny creature that you have brought home and has taken over your life.
- Celine Dion released a CD called "Miracle," which includes all songs about the miracle of becoming a mother. A variety of songs and styles are showcased, including lullabies.
- For the nostalgic romantics, there's always the classic tune "(You're) Having My Baby" by Paul Anka and Odia Cates.
