Music to Birth By
Songs Can Help You Relax, Focus and Possibly Even Ease Labor
By Kim Seidel
You can pick songs that relax and inspire you. Most importantly, choose songs that you personally love, bring good memories or motivate you. Dig up your own personal favorites, seek advice from friends and research the Internet for music that moves you.
Due this summer with her first child, Tali Hylen of East Lansing, Mich., says she definitely plans to use music while she's birthing and in labor. "I am a music junkie and make mixes for every phase in my life," she says. "A recent mix I made was my 'oh baby' mix with songs that center me and remind me that I'm pregnant and carrying a life inside of me."
When Hylen found out she was pregnant, she made a mix of songs for her iPod and she listens to them every day. Some of the songs include "These are Days" by 10,000 Maniacs; "Fireflies" by Lori McKenna; "Lullaby" by Billy Joel; "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns N' Roses; "Let My Love Open the Door" by Pete Townsend; "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" by Steve Wonder; "Dream a Little Dream of Me" by The Mamas & The Papas; "Gold to Me" by Ben Harper; "Sweet Baby James" by James Taylor; "Rocky Raccoon" by the Beatles; "Yellow" by Coldplay; "You Are So Beautiful" by Joe Cocker; "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" by the Beatles.
"I chose all of these songs because many are my favorites," Hylen says. "They all just have a happy, chill vibe. Well, aside from the Guns N' Rose one. My dad sang 'You Are So Beautiful' and 'Rocky Raccoon' to me as a child, so I will always love those songs. I'm sure my birth playlist will have more Beatles songs on it."
