The Traveling (and Pregnant) Life

On the Road While Expecting

Automobile travel for long periods can also aggravate DVT. "One must not travel for more than six hours a day, and one must get up and about every one to two hours," Dr. Zimring says. "Get out of the car and walk around. In developing countries, automobile accidents are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among travelers. Blunt trauma to the pregnant woman is really not advised."

"Car travel up to three to four hours can be done pretty much up to term," Dr. Hoffman says. "Keep in mind, some pregnant patients in this country live that far from the hospital [where] they are delivering." If patients start contracting, Dr. Hoffman tells them to get in the car and head straight home, drinking lots of water on the way.

Since nausea and vomiting can occur when traveling by sea, this mode of transportation isn't beneficial to a pregnant woman, Dr. Zimring says. Additionally, dehydration could be a serious consequence.

Going to certain countries isn't advisable, Dr. Zimring says. "Are there facilities to handle a complication of pregnancy if the woman has a premature delivery?" he asks. "How would she be evacuated to the U.S. or another country that could provide the care? Of course there are medical evacuation companies that would charge anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000 for their services, but would evacuation insurance cover that?"

To avoid such scenarios, Dr. Zimring says to check your travel insurance carefully, and remember tha most of your regular health insurance doesn't cover you outside of the country, nor does it provide evacuation coverage. In general, find out if your insurance covers you at your destination, and check out availability of care at the destination or en route.
