The Traveling (and Pregnant) Life

On the Road While Expecting

Stories from the Trenches

Rebeca Seitz of Fulton, Ky., travels a lot for her job – probably 12 to 15 trips per year. During her first pregnancy, when she was 7 1/2 months along, she actually got stuck in the snow of New York City and spent the night at the airport. "When I got home, the doc put me on bed rest, which meant my traveling came to an abrupt halt!" she says.

Speaking from experience, Seitz – who is now pregnant with her second child – recommends being smart when it comes to traveling with a pregnancy. "Check with your doctor," she says. "Pay attention to your body throughout the trip. Are you feeling tired? Sit down! This is not a time in your life to 'battle through' or ignore the stress signals your body is sending. Another little being is depending on you to be a mommy even before s/he makes his/her debut in the world. Drink plenty of water and drop some candies and crackers in your carry-on. Nibble, nibble, nibble, because all the walking (from car to plane, plane to baggage, baggage to taxi, taxi to hotel, hotel to meetings, etc.) chips away at your energy reserves, and your body needs plenty to service both you and the baby."

Another frequent traveler is Laura Dihel from Bartlett, Ill. Throughout her first pregnancy, she traveled approximately four times a month. Like Seitz, she's pregnant with her second child. "The fact [that] I was pregnant did not diminish my desire to stay an active, engaged part of my clients' businesses," Dihel says. "It was important to me to remain 100 percent throughout my pregnancy as I knew I'd be devoting 100 percent of my time to my new baby after birth."
