An Easy Labor?

A Dad's Eye View of Labor and the Birthing Process

So be supportive, but be careful what you promise. Any shred of coolness that you still pretended to have disappears behind the wheel of any minivan, even the ones with gadgetry worthy of James Bond – GPS, doors that open themselves, DVD players and video games, bun warmers for those cold mornings. All neat-o on paper, but while stopped at the light, it's still a minivan. Did you notice how none of the Transformers were minivans? Because there's no way to make them cool. (If there was one, it would be a mother to the other Transformers, OptiMom Prime, telling them that it was time to stop horsing around and come home for dinner.)

And keep your promises. Got that? Make a promise to yourself right now that no matter what happens, you will keep your cool, keep breathing and keep doing everything she asks you to do (unless, in a moment of sheer fury, she asks you to do something anatomically impossible, in which case, you stroke her hair gently and say, "Later, honey, later. Let's focus on you and the baby now.") Easier said than done, because there's going to be a lot of stuff going on there, some of which is not easy on the senses.
