Baby Names You Never Thought Of
8 Current Baby Naming Trends of the Times
By Melinda Copp
Parents have always seen naming their child as the first big decision for giving their new baby an identity. But these days, parents place even more weight on this decision, using their children's names to establish family identity, and perhaps give their child the name they never had. Regardless of what parents hope to accomplish when naming their little ones, they definitely find creative ways to do it. For the latest trends in naming Baby, consider the following.
Parents often look to pop culture for baby name ideas. For example, Tiffany was the hottest name for girls in the '80s and Britney was big eight years ago, but these days, Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus are the pop culture queens.
"Miley is hugely popular right now," says Lonna Corder, a San Francisco-based parenting coach and preschool director. These teen stars are everywhere, and little girls love them, so their names are popular for new babies as a result.
Big families are more popular than they have been in years. People are not only having more kids, but they are planning bigger families from the start, and coming up with themes for the names as well.
"Three kids is definitely the new two," Corder says. "And I've seen lots of family naming themes." For example, everyone getting the same initials, everyone named after a flower or all traditional last names as first names. This trend takes family planning to a whole new level.
Following the stars has always been a popular naming strategy – Jayden, for example, has become one of the most popular names for boys since Britney Spears gave her son that name a few years ago. And although Apple didn't exactly catch on, so far this year the star baby names have been less ... um ... creative, but still unique and beautiful. This year Halle Berry named her new baby girl Nahla. Cate Blanchett named her family's new addition – a little boy – Ignatius. And J. Lo's twins are named Max and Emme.
