Single with Baby
The Importance of Networking with Other Parents
By Renee Roberson
Welage says she would love to have more single parents join her group. "I can't say enough about how wonderful the McBurney YMCA has been," she says. "Fathers, of course, are welcome to join the group. However, I have yet to have a father contact us."
With the help of technology, many single parents are able to network with other parents, single or not, through online forums. For example, The Mommies Network, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping moms find support and friendship in their local community, now has 75 online communities in 25 different states. But the site memberships aren't just limited to women – in 2007, the group opened their first "Dads Only" network, and they now have five communities in the United States for men to join. Each area site has a private "single parents" forum where parents can arrange playdates, parent night out events and just provide moral support for each other if needed.
Wendy*, a single mom from San Francisco, Calif., wanted to have the best of both worlds and communicate with other moms in similar situations both online and in person. She tried to network with other parents on the popular Web site Craig's List but never managed to form any lasting friendships. Like Welage, she decided to form her own group for support.
