Single with Baby
The Importance of Networking with Other Parents
By Renee Roberson
"The single moms in the group are either separated or divorced, single and never married the dad of their child or conceived through the sperm bank or in-vitro," Wendy says. "We may have had a single mom who adopted."
She says the primary communication for the group, which has approximately 100 members based primarily in the San Francisco Bay and San Jose demographics, is through a Google group that is private and only accessible to members. In addition to participating in discussions, the group also organizes and plans events and get-togethers though the forum, and she recently started a Web site (www.hotsinglemoms.net) to help attract members to the group.
In the future, Wendy hopes to start a similar support group for single dads as well, and currently has a separate Web site in development for it. She wants to keep the groups separate so they can discuss issues and concerns privately. "But in terms of both groups getting together for activities, such as a picnic for single parents with their kids, etc., I hope to be able to integrate both groups in social settings," Wendy says.
Dr. Tessina says she can't stress enough the importance of single parents making the effort to meet other parents. "Parents can share baby clothes, furniture, ideas, parenting tips, recommendations for health care professionals, school and teachers," she says. "Not only will it save you money, but it will also be the beginning of a lifelong connection with these families, and lasting friendships among your children."
