Your Baby's Birth Story
Writing Tips and Creative Ways to Preserve It
By Becky Lane
Then include all the detail you care to reveal about your actual labor and delivery. Don't forget to describe how it felt to see your little one for the first time. What did contractions feel like to you? What did your partner or family do during labor and afterwards? How was your recovery?
Remember, though, when you're including that paragraph about getting stitched up after the birth or what you thought about your mother-in-law's hovering during contractions, that other people might read your story – especially if you publish it online. This brings us to the next section – what to leave out of your birth story.
If you have any thought that you might publish your child's birth story on a site like Birthstories.com or in a personal blog, there are some things that might be better left unsaid. First of all, if you are writing anything at all intimate or personal, you might want to consider not including your last name or e-mail.
Also, when publishing for the public eye, it's best to avoid using a doctor's or midwife's full name or the name of your hospital or birth center. Even if you've got nothing but praise for the medical staff that helped you deliver, the standard procedure for most Web sites like Birthstories.com is to not include full names of professional staff. If you have to include a name other than "the doctor," use a first initial only, as in "Dr. S" for Dr. Smith.
