When the Sun Burns

Risks, Prevention and Treatment of Sunburn During Pregnancy

By Lisa A. Goldstein

When Kelly Tanabe of the San Francisco Bay Area was pregnant, she slathered on sunscreen every two hours, wore a big, floppy hat and stood in the shade whenever possible. She was especially vigilant during her pregnancy because she wanted to reduce the risk of having to apply any medication that she didn't need. She was successful in avoiding sunburn.

"I went to such measures because I felt like anything I did to myself I was also doing to my baby," Tanabe says. "I didn't want to take any unnecessary risks, and it seemed like a small sacrifice to make to slather on the sunscreen or even stay out of the sun altogether." Her actions are paying it forward – her son now gets the same treatment.

What else can be done to avoid sunburn? "Pregnant women can safely prevent sunburn and risks of heat exposure during pregnancy by following the same rules as for infants and small children," says Dr. Aagaard-Tillery, who lists them as follows:

  • Avoid going out in the heat and strongest rays of the day (usually between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.).
  • Wear a hat, loose clothing and carry appropriate sunscreen when you go out.
  • Apply a high-potency (SPF 40 or greater) and broad-spectrum sunscreen when out for significant periods of time.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and keep cool by spraying your face, neck and upper arms with cool water.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise in the heat.
  • Consult and follow the advice of your physician or midwife. Every pregnant woman has unique concerns and these are best discussed with your health care provider who knows you well.
