No Insurance and Pregnant
Your Options If Facing an Uninsured Pregnancy

There is perhaps nothing as intimidating as discovering you're pregnant and uninsured. Sarah Rose Evans knows what a nightmare that can be. She and her husband planned on having a baby while she was still in graduate school and covered by school insurance. Their plans changed and they ended up moving across the country.
"I took my time in looking for a job with good insurance coverage," says Evans, a mother of one from Portland, Ore. "I found one that fit the bill and then when I was 7 months pregnant, I lost the job and I was facing the rest of my pregnancy and birth without insurance."
Evans had planned on a home birth, but that was still going to cost more than $3,000. Because they had to pay out of pocket, the couple only had one ultrasound taken for safety reasons. But the stress took its toll.
"I was incredibly stressed out and angry during that time," Evans says. "If something went wrong and I ended up in the hospital, we would be in a lot of financial trouble."
The birth went according to plan, but Evans, like many other mothers, dreaded going through pregnancy uninsured. But there are options for women who are uninsured.
Pamela Ferrari is a registered nurse and director of Performance Improvement for Open Door Family Medical Centers, Inc., a group of federally qualified Community Health Centers located in Westchester County, N.Y. According to Ferrari, having a baby has become quite costly.
