Doubly Blessed on Christmas

A Mother's Story of Delivering Twins

The ultrasound revealed two babies. Two! And both were completely normal. I sat up stunned. The emotional roller coaster of miscarriage fear combined with the discovery of twins was too much. Tears filled my eyes. But was I happy or sad? I suddenly laughed with excitement at the thought of two babies. What would Lars say?

Lars was stunned but thrilled. He supported me through seven months of all-day sickness and patted my shoulder when I sat on my closet floor sobbing and laughing, unable to fit into my maternity clothes – again. The poor guy had to cope with twin doses of pregnancy hormones. And when a second ultrasound revealed twin boys, Lars helped quell my disappointment over not having a daughter. Together, we accepted the testosterone-filled future and looked forward to welcoming our boys.

Labor Day
On Christmas Day we held hands while Max opened his presents. The twins kicked and kicked as if wanting to share in the moment. I caressed my Buddha-like stomach, imagining the joy of next Christmas with three boys, when the first cramp hit me.

The cramps turned into random contractions, and I didn't know what this meant. During my first delivery, the contractions had quickly becme regular. This time the contractions felt too erratic for true labor, and I didn't want to disturb my doctor on Christmas morning over Braxton-Hicks labor pains.
