Doubly Blessed on Christmas

A Mother's Story of Delivering Twins

I decided to call the hospital and ask for advice. Since I was at 35 weeks with twins, the on-call doctor advised me to drink a big glass of water – this can sometimes stop false labor – and come in immediately for a check.

As I hung up the phone, panic hit me. I couldn't help thinking of my friends who had agonized watching their tiny preemies struggle for life. I was sleeping little, waddling to the bathroom every 10 minutes and battling constant heartburn, but I wanted these babies to stay inside of me longer!

At least my contractions were still random. "Hopefully it's just false labor," I told my mom on the phone, in denial that I might deliver five weeks early. My mom was thrilled at the thought of Christmas twins, but we both hoped for a later delivery date. Just in case, she offered to meet me on the way to the hospital to take Max.

In bed at LDS hospital, I bit my lip as machines monitored my contractions and each baby's heartbeat. I tried not to panic, rubbing my tummy and murmuring, "Not yet, guys!" But after an hour, the doctor confirmed I was in labor and dilated to 3 centimeters. "You're a keeper," he said.

An ultrasound revealed that my first baby was in the normal "head-down" position, but my second baby was breech. The machine also showed that both babies were unusually big for 35 weeks. The doctor smiled and assured me they would most likely be fine.
