  • Shaolin Cardio Kickbox for Beginners

For more detailed information, check out The Complete Idiot's Guide to Kickboxing.

Kickboxing is just one option when it comes to martial arts. Other disciplines include Aikido, Tae Kwon Do and Jiu Jitsu, but as mentioned above, pregnancy is not the time to take up any of these activities. These sports involve hand and foot fighting, falling and knocking opponents down, all of which can seriously injure you or the baby. As mentioned, if you've been actively involved in those sports, your doctor may give you the go ahead to continue, providing you modify your level of participation. However, it's a good idea to avoid any activity in which your belly becomes an unwitting target!

    Safety Precautions

Keeping yourself injury free and your baby safe should always be your first priority so make sure you:

    • Check with your doctor before beginning any new exercise and before continuing any activities in which you're already involved.
    • When taking a class, talk with the instructor so he or she can work with you and help you modify moves when needed.
    • Avoid over-crowded gym classes.
    • Keep an eye on your balance and go at your own pace so you always have control of your body.
    • Pay attention to how you feel. If you get dizzy or lightheaded or experience any other warning flags, stop immediately and check with your doctor.
