After three wonderful years of marriage, my husband and I decided to start trying for a baby. I had had problems with endometriosis in the past, so we were both a little concerned that we might have trouble getting pregnant. Even if that didn't turn out to be a problem, we figured it would take at least a few months – a year, even – for us to become pregnant. I mean, I'd read the statistics – only about 20 percent of couples get pregnant on their first try. As it turns out, we were one of those lucky 20 percent!
Near the end of July, I had to fly out of state for a few days to attend a wedding. (Because of work, my husband was unable to come with me.) My period was a day or two late, but I was experiencing horrible cramps, so I figured it was only a matter of time before it came. The cramps went on for several days, though, and no period (which is unusual for me). I expressed my concern about this to a friend (who had recently become pregnant), and she said, "Oh! Haven't you heard of implantation cramping? My doctor said that is a common symptom in early pregnancy!" That REALLY freaked me out.
Two days before I was due to fly home, I decided to take a home pregnancy test while over at my sister's house. I don't think I was really prepared to see that blue line! I started crying and screaming and shaking, and nearly scared my 2-year-old nephew to death!
As much as I was dying to tell my husband the news, I didn't want to just do it in a phone call. So when I spoke to him on the phone the next morning, I acted as if nothing was new. (A performance that should have won me an Academy Award, considering how I was feeling inside!) Meanwhile, I was plotting a really cool way to "spill the beans."
