Celebrity Baby Names 2008

Which Celebrities Had Babies and What They Named Them

From the ever-growing Jolie-Pitt clan to the first pregnancy for over-40 star Nicole Kidman, 2008 might go down in Hollywood history as the Year of the Baby. While some new Tinsel Town parents selected popular names, many opted for unusual choices that just might influence the baby-naming decisions of fans in years to come.

Seeing Double
Perhaps the most publicized pregnancy of 2008 was that of Angelina Jolie and partner Brad Pitt. Enthusiasm doubled when the press revealed the couple was expecting twins. The names chosen for the duo – Vivienne Marcheline and Knox Leon – have familial significance: "Marcheline" is Angelina's late mother's name, "Knox" is the middle name of Brad's grandfather and "Leon" is the name of Angelina's great-great grandfather.

But Vivienne and Knox were far from being the only famous twins of 2008. Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony welcomed boy/girl twins, choosing the names Max and Emme – characters from the PBS animated series Dragon Tales. (Singer Christina Aguilera also named her son Max, while skater Scott Hamilton opted for the spelling "Maxx" for his new son. Also getting in on the "X" ending were Gillian Anderson's son, Felix, and Matt Hoover's son, Jax.)

Perhaps the most publicized pregnancy of 2008 was that of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

Other double-blessed celebrities include Lisa Marie Presley (daughters Finley and Harper), actress Diane Farr (daughters Coco and Sawyer), football player David Tyree (daughters Hannah and Sophia), actress Rebecca Romijn and actor Jerry O'Connell (daughters Dolly Rebecca Rose and Charlie Tamara Tulip), and dancer Tony Dovolani (son Adrian and daughter Ariana). Not to be outdone, Dovolani's Dancing with the Stars partner Marissa Jaret Winokur, a cervical cancer survivor, became the mother of son Zev via surrogate. Other show alums who became parents were Laila Ali (son Curtis) and Brooke Burke (son Shaya).

The Old Is New Again
In both Hollywood and the population at large, the classics made a comeback in 2008.

"Trendy names no longer sound trendy," says Linda Rosenkrantz, co-author of The Baby Name Bible (St. Martin's Griffin, 2007) and Cool Names for Babies (St. Martin's Griffin, 2008). "The girls' names rising most rapidly in popularity now – Olivia, Sophia, Isabella and Ava – are all classics with real meaning and history (as opposed to Britney, Tiffany, etc.). Also, I'm noticing a rise in names with a touch of old Hollywood glamour – Harlow, Audrey, Ava."
