Beauty, Health and Fitness Tips from the Experts for Postpartum Wellness

Brooke Shields' Healthy Upgrade Team-Beauty, Health and Fitness Tips from the Experts for Postpartum WellnessIt may seem as if celebrity moms give birth, take a quick nap and then rise in perfection from their postpartum pillow, ready for their close-up. Oh, they wish. In fact, just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a team to whip the beautiful and famous back into shape after pregnancy and delivery – especially hands-on parents like Brooke Shields. After having two children in three years, Shields realized that she was going through what every new and expectant mom goes through – not enough time for her own beauty care.

While she can't give the world her brows, her eyes, her fabulous bone structure (if only!), Shields has pulled together a team of her own experts to offer advice to busy moms. Brooke Shields' Healthy Upgrade Team consists of Jeanne Yang, a celebrity stylist, beauty expert and mom of 5-year-old twins; Stacey Griffith, a 20-year fitness veteran who trains Brooke at SoulCycle, a premier NYC indoor cycling studio; and Michelle Dozier, D.D.S, who strives to educate women about the connection between oral care and broader health issues. She's also responsible for Brooke's pearly whites. Their tips are timely and terrific, and are ideas any woman can use, regardless of her parenting phase.

Beauty Tips
"I know from experience that new moms don't have a lot of time," says Yang. "The trick is to minimize your beauty routine by doing small things that give you a glow."

The trick is to minimize your beauty routine by doing small things that give you a glow.

Yang's super fast beauty ideas keep you looking fresh and put together even on the most hectic days:

  • A Healthy Glow: The best look for anyone is a tan, Yang says, but not from the sun, which is time-consuming and tough on the skin. Also forgo the self-tanners for now, as they may contain chemicals that pregnant women and new moms would be wise to avoid. Instead, Yang recommends mixing bronzer with a bit of moisturizer and using it as a foundation. It's quick, cheap and safe. This can brighten up your look summer and winter, and a tan will make you appear thinner and make your smile appear brighter.
  • A Refreshing Spritz: Feeling frazzled? Put some cool water and a few drops of essential oil into a small spray bottle and give your face an occasional spritz. Use it throughout the day for a breath of fresh scent that clears the mind.
  • A Faux Mani: One great thing about prenatal vitamins is that they make your skin and hair lustrous and strong. For new moms who don't have time for a manicure and pedicure (and expectant moms avoiding the chemicals) keep nails filed short and neat. Rub a little jojoba oil in for shine and soft cuticles. Neatly filed nails with a bit of a shine look professionally manicured.
  • A Quick Condition: Yang loves her jojoba oil. Rub a bit into the ends of the hair, especially if it's long enough to then be put up into a bun. The oil conditions hair while giving it a smooth, groomed look. Jojoba oil is available virtually everywhere, probably even your grocery store.
  • A Pinch of Color: Use cheek and lip stains, available wherever makeup is sold, rather than lipstick and blush. Apply with a sponge in the morning and it will last all day and give a hint of color.
  • Fitness Tips
Stacey Griffith says pregnant women and new moms should never work out without their doctor's approval. But, in general, she says most women can work out, at least on some level, up until the last three weeks of pregnancy.
