As a lead New York facial plastic surgeon who receives and administers Botox treatments, Dr. Allison Pontius knows how hard it is to give up some beauty treatments during pregnancy. But which treatments are safe to continue during pregnancy?
"Likely, the Botox is not absorbed systemically; however, we don't know this for sure because Botox has not been studied in pregnant women," Dr. Pontius says. "However, because of the potential risk, we advise against pregnant and nursing women getting Botox."

As a mother who is breastfeeding her newborn daughter, Dr. Pontius says she is waiting to resume Botox treatments for herself.
Any elective surgery should be avoided during pregnancy as well because of the risk to the fetus, according to Dr. Pontius.
