Transverse Pregnancies

Dealing with a Sideways Baby

The sideways or transverse babyThe only thing a woman in the last couple of weeks of pregnancy wants to hear is "everything is fine." To hear anything else is disturbing and just adds to the general discomfort of the home stretch.

Johanna Zumallen from Nixa, Mo., was in the 8th month of her pregnancy when she first heard the words "transverse lie," which refers to the way the baby lies in the womb. It isn't the way they are supposed to be lying, either!

Some statistics say that the transverse lie occurs in only one in every 2,000 births.

"My uterus apparently is in the shape of a heart, thus allowing her to go sideways," Zumallen says. "She also was 10 pounds, 3 ounces at birth, so her sheer size made her not want to go head down. I was really nervous only because I was scared of having a C-section. They tried to turn her, but that didn't work. Within two hours she had moved right back."

The baby wouldn't budge and Zumallen ended up having a C-section that went very well, which isn't unusual for a transverse lie pregnancy.

What Is a Transverse Lie Pregnancy?
Dr. Brenna Anderson, an assistant professor for the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine for the Women and Infants hospital in Providence, R.I., says the proper term for this condition is the transverse fetal lie and refers to the direction the fetus assumes prior to delivery.

I am 35 weeks and baby has been transverse all along. I am having an ultrasound on Wed to check if a version should be attempted. I am a bit nervous about this as I hear it can be painful. Really want a natural birth though as my first two went really well. K sera sera!

im 38 wks and 4 days along. i go to get a sono tomorrow to check to see for sure...but my OB thinks my baby is in transverse position :( very disappointing. my first baby i delivered fully natural and vaginally. so it'd be a bummer if my second baby now doesnt decide to turn and let me deliver it vaginally. i dont want a c-section...but whatever is best for baby i guess.

I am 36 weeks and my doc found yesterday that my baby is transverse and that it move from the down position only within 2 weeks ago. Its got 2 weeks to move back otherwise I will be having a ceaserean at the end of the month. I am a bit devastated as was looking forward to a natural labour and birth but can't help whats happen and if a c-section is required then let it be. As long as bubs and I are OK is the main thing. Good luck to you all. - Michelle.
