Single Moms on Bed Rest

Finding the Help You Need While on Bed Rest

single moms on bed restBeing prescribed bed rest during pregnancy is never easy. But when you're a single mom, being put on bed rest comes with unique problems.

Regina Thomas of Los Angeles, Calif., is a single soon-to-be mom, just released from 10 weeks of bed rest. "I was in my 22nd week and had just marveled to someone how easy this pregnancy had been so far," says Thomas. Then she started having contractions, apparently caused by growing uterine fibroids.

One trick is to spread out the help. It's easier than asking one person to provide everything you need.

Without a spouse for support, Thomas found herself relying on others. "The hardest thing for me as a very independent person was asking for help for the most basic functions," she says. "I had a village of about 17 people who did everything from drive me to doctors appointments to bring me food to just calling me to check in. Some I asked, but most volunteered. It was amazing!"

Summoning Support
Depending on their restrictions, single moms may need help with everything from food preparation to childcare to household chores. Even when family and friends volunteer, it's often difficult to accept help.

I have the same concerns regarding financial help due to being on bed rest. I will be on bed rest for 5 weeks now with no paycheck coming to me. I have been searching the web for answers and I am not getting anywhere. If anyone knows any information that can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

I just got put on bedrest I have 8 year old twins and a 4 year old...I am 35 weeks...the Dr prescribed procardia. I had to call my boss and tell her I couldn't come back to work till after the baby is born. I only have to be on bedrest for 2 weeks but when you are a single parent not bringing in a paycheck this is a very scary situation. How will I pay rent, bills, for food?
