It's a beautiful white winter and you're itching to get outside and play. Good. I don't want you hibernating in front of the fire and cultivating the winter blues. Some exercise is really good for you – and your pregnancy. Not only will you be in a better mood right after being outdoors, you'll feel great about your pregnancy and may even have an easier delivery down the road.
Plus, exercise will get you in better shape. How? Snow sports not only work your heart and lungs – that's why they are considered aerobic exercises – they also really strengthen your muscles and bones. That's because when you're in the snow, whether you're skiing or having a snowball fight, you're using your legs to carry your weight.
You need gear to stay warm, but your fetus doesn't. |

These weight-bearing exercises are good for your pregnancy and may prepare you especially well for delivery, so that it is quicker and less painful. And regular exercise also is terrific for your fetus. Studies show that babies benefit when their mothers are active. Let's not forget the most important part: Playing in the snow is so irresistibly fun.
Exercising in the snow is intense. This is because the snow offers resistance to your muscles. Think about it this way: When you're walking on pavement, your feet glide through the air without your giving them a thought. When you're in the snow, you trudge. And every step requires effort.
