Spotting During Pregnancy

Should Moms-to-be Worry If They're Spotting?

Spotting during pregnancy - should you worry about spotting? When Cynthia Corona from San Jose, Calif., contacted a Pregnancy Today site expert about her light spotting, she was, as she says, "freaking out." Her spotting had been intermittent, just some pink and brown on the toilet tissue, but she was terrified of losing the pregnancy. An ultrasound a few weeks later calmed her fears. Not only was she still pregnant, but she was expecting twins. The spotting turned out to be just her body's way of adjusting to a twin pregnancy.

Although very scary, especially for a first-time mother-to-be, spotting is fairly common in pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. What can ease a woman's fears is understanding the reasons for spotting and knowing what action she should take.

Signs and Symptoms

Any bleeding during the second and third trimesters should be immediately reported to your doctor.

When a woman finds anything that even remotely resembles blood when she's pregnant, her first thought is usually of miscarriage. But according to Dr. Aneema Van Groenou, a staff physician at Kaiser Permanente in Hayward, Calif., and the author of The Active Woman's Guide to Pregnancy: Practical Advice for Getting Outdoors When Expecting (Ten Speed Press, 2004), a miscarriage generally has some pretty specific symptoms associated with it aside from just spotting.

"Some people do spot during a typical pregnancy, especially in the first three months as your body adjusts to the hormone levels," says Dr. Van Groenou. "It commonly happens around the time your period would be due. Sometimes people don't even realize they're pregnant because they bleed right on schedule."

I had some heavy brown spotting during week 5 and then started to bleed like having a light-med period on week 6 which continued for two whole weeks and finally eased up at the end of week 8.I'm still spotting but thankfully the blood tests and the ultrasound show the pregnancy is progressing. I'm at week 10 now

Very encouraging stories, thanks to all. I am about 4 1/2 weeks and have been spotting constantly since I tested positive. I have never been certain if it's "spotting" or "bleeding"...? Went to the doctor on a Friday (same day I had a on HPT), numbers were good. Went back the next Monday to retest and am awaiting those results. The waiting is awful!

I appreciate this article. It put aside alot of my anxiety. I've been spotting for about a week (pink and brown-mostly pink) and the doctor said it was normal. We had an ultrasound of the baby and heard the baby's strong heartbeat. I just hope and pray that this is really a 'normal' situation and hope the spotting will stop soon...because it is scary. The best thing to do is to stay positive and not stress out. Everything will be alright. "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future". God bless you all! =:0)
