Misty Fry of Roseville, Calif., did not find out she was pregnant with fraternal twins until her sons were born 17 years ago. Today it's rare to have any mystery surrounding the birth of multiples. It's becoming increasingly more common for some women to try to have twins.

"I think sometimes people think it's a novelty, although having twins [is] becoming more common," Fry says. "Triplets is more the novelty than twins now."

Fry, who is the executive vice president of the National Organization of Mothers of Twins, says as a single parent she knows about both the struggles and joys of having twins. Her children tend to forgive as easily as they fight, she says.

Jahnaleigh Hill-Dattilio of Rocklin, Calif., found out she was carrying twins at 9 weeks into her pregnancy. She fits the typical profile of a woman more likely to have twins. Twins run in her family. Also, she was 37 years old, and already had a 2-year-old son, Jordan, when she became pregnant.
