Morning Sickness

Causes and Cures of Morning Sickness

Morning sickness: It's one of the most frequently complained about symptoms of pregnancy. Mention it in a group full of women and most will moan in recognition. You can't live with it, and, if you're pregnant, you probably can't get out of it. How do women cope? How long does it last, and can something so common be dangerous?

Jennifer Hans, a mother of four from Fort Wayne, Ind., dealt with morning sickness with all four pregnancies. "I had a swimmy tummy from the time I got up in the morning until the time I got into bed at night," says Hans. "Although I never vomited, I had to endure a constant case of nausea that made me feel horrible around the clock."

Taking a multivitamin at the time of conception can decrease the severity and frequency of pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting.

Though Hans tried every remedy available, nothing seemed to cure the morning sickness all together. She did find that keeping something in her stomach helped keep the sickness at bay, and knowing that it wouldn't last forever kept her going.

"Morning sickness doesn't last forever," says Hans. "It's hard to imagine, but food will be appealing to you once again. You just have to let nature run its course."

Sounds like Ms. Hans had an extremely MILD case of morning sickness. Don't be fooled! It CAN last forever! Well, nine months anyway. I was sick 24 hours a day for nine months, nauseas AND vomitting the whole time. It was almost unbearable. I had to be hospitalized several times for dehydration. It can be a terrible thing and after dealing with it for so long, it can be very taxing on you physically and emotionally. I truly hope that no one has to go through what I did. Unfortunately it deterred me from having anymore children.

This is my second pregnancy ... I am about 7 weeks along (5 weeks from conception) and so far, no morning sickness, and very minimal nausea (when my stomach is completely empty!). My oldest is 8 years old and he's as excited as I am!
