Pregnancy is a condition fraught with emotions such as joy, worry and anticipation.
If you have been in a car accident while pregnant, another emotion surfaces: anxiety.
How do you know the treatments you're receiving won't harm your baby? What should
you tell your emergency care worker? What should you know?
Antoinette Kuritz, a publicist from San Diego, Calif., remembers all too well the fear you feel. She was 6 months pregnant with her second child when she was hit by a drunk driver doing 70 mph to her 45.
All pregnant women should be checked out after an auto accident, even if it's merely a fender bender. |

"Hit in the left rear quarter panel, my car spun so hard that one of the doors and the back deck flew open," Kuritz says. "I broke the steering wheel with my face – you can imagine what that steering wheel did in return – had a basal skull fracture, and went into labor. When I came to, I would not allow any treatment until my OB arrived."
Her doctor stitched up her face, which led to extensive reconstructive surgery later. She refused any X-rays, and premature labor was stopped with an IV. The rest of her pregnancy was spent with very little activity – a difficulty with two other children.
I was involved in a major car accident last sat. the day before I would be 9 months pregnant. Traffic was stoped behind a van turning left into a yard sale. We were the 4th vehicle. We were in a 2008 GMC 4 door Siearra pickup truck. I was in the back seat behind the driver. I had been experinceing contractions and my parents were driving me to the hospital to have me checked out. This is my 2nd pregnancy. While we were stoped my dad who was driving kept saying hes not slowing down hes not slowing down. I preceded to brace myself. A few momments later we were struck from behind by a honda van going at least 55 mph. I have felt lower back pain since the accident and have several bruises on my lower back. I was taken to the hospital and checked out then realised and returned to the hospital the next day and again was realised. Everything is fine with the baby but everytime i have one of those so called "nusense contractions" my back pain gets even worse. As my midwife said I could go any day now I would like to know if I should consider having a c-section instead since I may have pulled something in my back and may not be able to push like I could have before the accident. any suggestions?
